This picture is reminiscent of the alleys that ran down the center of so many Detroit blocks, separating houses that faced parallel streets. My grandmother and father planted Hollyhocks behind their garages. A colorful and care-free crop would emerge each summer.

  1. The alleys that our father walked down every day to get to his office at John R and Brush were not this idyllic. I remember they smelled of the urine of homeless people and I have a dim recollection of some family comment that prostitutes inhabited that area.
